About Heal A Heart

Friends Of Wake County Animal Center’s Heal-a-Heart program sponsors Heartworm positive dogs that have been in the shelter or foster care for 30 days or more. In order to promote adoption and improved health, our charity offers $350 toward the care and veterinary treatment of this condition to help defray the costs for adopters.

Once a sponsored dog is adopted, the shelter provides the new forever family with instructions for contacting our program coordinator. Our program coordinator is happy to assist adopters every step of the way, by guiding them through the process and answering any questions that they may have.

The Friends Of Wake County Animal Center offers information on local vets that provide discounts to shelter dogs, but the adopters are welcome to choose any vet that they wish. The sponsorship funds are paid directly to the veterinary practice when the dog is being treated. 

Through our Heal-a-Heart program, we have given hundreds of Heartworm positive dogs the chance to live their best lives with their new families as healthy, Heartworm-free beloved pets.
